Writing Blogs Without the Salesy Tone

Writing online content is something that takes not only time, but careful consideration. You need to decide on the tone of voice, the message, the style, the images and ultimately the point of the content. Getting the right formula is not always simple, and it’s easy to end up with your blogs sounding similar to your ‘about us’ page – that is to say, decidedly salesy. And that’s just not what customers (and, crucially, your potential customers) want to read.

In this article we look at how to create engaging blog content that drives traffic and promotes your brand without bombarding readers with unwelcome sales speak. As we will see, subtle tweaks in your language are important, but ultimately it’s the content you produce that will play the biggest role. Scroll on down to read our expert tips…

If You Like… A Blog Series for HomeAway

At World Words, we love writing travel blog content. And not just our own – for other companies too! So when we were contacted by the lovely people at HomeAway earlier this year to write a series of blogs, we were delighted.

We had previously written a selection of travel guides for the holiday rental company, but now they wanted us to develop something a bit different: three long-form blogs that would promote some of their more – in their eyes – underrated Asian destinations. They found that their customers regularly booked three big destinations – Tokyo, Singapore and Bali – but were less likely to book other equally-appealing cities such as Kuala Lumpur and Seoul.

So it was our job to promote those lesser-visited cities. The idea? A series of ‘If You Like…’ blogs, comparing the top destinations to some less popular ones. We wrote three blog pieces in total, and you can read them below…

Our Travels: Southwest Iceland

First, we took you to the remote chilly outcrop of Isle of Harris, Scotland. Then we experienced the Mediterranean charms of Corsica, France. Next, cultural Quebec, Canada and fun Dubai, UAE. Now, for our fifth and final (in 2016) Our Travels blog, we are heading back to Europe to the far northern hotspot of Reykjavik and Southwest Iceland.

Our editor-in-chief Joe recently visited Iceland on long weekend break, staying in the small town of Hafnarfjordur, just outside Reykjavik, and exploring the southwestern corner of the island. Scroll on down to read his thoughts…

Our Travels: Corsica, France

The content team at World Words have a real passion for travelling. Well, what else do you expect from dedicated travel content writers? Our writers and editors are always busy exploring the globe, from inner-city culture to idyllic island escapes, and they love nothing more than sharing their experiences with others. That’s why we’ve created a brand new blog series called Our Travels, in which our team members share their experiences directly with you.

It all started last month, with this article from staff content writer Nathanael on the Isle of Harris. This month, editor-in-chief Joe takes us on a quick tour of Corsica, a majestic island in the Med – just 100 miles off the French coast.
