Cultural Sensitivity and Travel Content

After returning from a trip, travellers are usually consumed by an overwhelming desire to tell everyone about the amazing experience they have had. This is what a travel writer is paid to do in the most eloquent way possible. However, it can also be the hardest part to master when it comes to depicting and representing other cultures.

Cultural sensitivity should be paramount when writing travel content, but it is often sorely overlooked. Mariellen Ward of the Breathedreamgo travel blog has discussed the dangers of cultural imperialism (or the belief that your way of life is better) in travel writing, while photographer Bani Amor has criticised colonialism in travel literature.

When writing about location, ethnicity and society, there are certain to be complicated politics that come into play. Although there’s no one-size-fits-all phrasebook to help travel writers avoid all controversy in their content, there are helpful tricks for traversing this complicated terrain. Striking, Spirited and Eternally Sunny – Our New Guide to Sydney for Travelmob

‘Location, location, location’ – so goes the famous real estate mantra. If there were a travel-world equivalent, it would have to be ‘accommodation, accommodation, accommodation’. Where you choose to lay your head can make or break your trip. And with the spectrum of what constitutes accommodation widening year upon year, travellers are faced with more choice than ever.

At World Words, we have found ourselves writing about all kinds of places to stay, not just hotels, but also luxury villas, monasteries, farms and other unusual immersive accommodations. Recently, we have begun working with Travelmob, a vacation rental site whose goal is to help travellers live like locals, which means staying in local homes. We’ve been cooking up compelling landing page copy designed to give potential customers the lay of the land for destinations all across Asia and Australasia.

First up to get the World Words treatment is sunny Sydney. Scroll down to read more.

Google’s New Digital Garage Highlights Why Pro Travel Content Writing is Vital

Back in March this year, Google premiered an ambitious new project called The Digital Garage. Billed as ‘a growth engine for digital skills’, The Digital Garage is designed to help British and European businesses grow their online presence by offering tutorials on a wide variety of digital marketing skills. They cover everything from web content to social media to search marketing, affording travel companies helpful insight into cementing an online presence.

Start working your way through the tutorials, and you’ll find something else becomes abundantly clear. That, for all these different forms of digital marketing, their success mainly depends on the quality of the written travel content.

Website Content for Off The Map Travels

Have you ever wished your travel website was working just that little bit harder? Have you yearned for copy that’s beautifully written to catch the attention, while also getting your key sales messages across to the right audience?

That’s what Off the Map Travels wanted – and that’s why they came to World Words.

Off the Map Travels, a customised travel planning service set up by avid traveller Sara Nakash, asked us to create new website content that would engage their audience – an intrepid bunch looking for local culture, adventurous activities and a little bit of luxury too – and also clarify the key sales messages and increase the visibility of calls to action. We began by reworking the content that was already there, and then suggested our own new additions.

The new website has now gone live, so you can see the fruits of our labour by clicking here. Or for a taste of how our content works even without a fancy design, scroll down to read our copy for the homepage and ‘About’ page.
