Summer is well under way in the northern hemisphere, so the sun-loving members of the World Words team are busy planning their warm-weather travel adventures. But there’s still enough room for nostalgia for chillier times.

In this popular Our Travels blog series, World Words writers and editors take a look back at some of their most memorable experiences abroad. We’re a very well-travelled bunch, so you can read about our trips everywhere from Madeira to New York State and from India to Belarus. And they’re just some of the most recent excursions.

Edinburgh Castle to Loch Ness: Writing and Editing Fodor’s Essential Scotland

We love Scotland. Whether its the country’s storied castles, craggy peaks, sublime seafood, iconic golf courses or peat-kissed whisky, there really is something for everyone. It is a small country with an enormous amount to offer.

So when World Words was asked by Fodor’s to help update their Essential Scotland guidebook, we leapt at the opportunity. We know Scotland exceptionally well, with many writers either current or ex-residents, so we knew we had the destination knowledge to do Scotland justice. We were asked to update three chapters: ‘Edinburgh and the Lothians’, ‘Inverness and Around the Great Glen’, and ‘The Northern Highlands and the Western Isles’.

The job involved travelling the length and breadth of each region, seeing every previously-listed tourist attraction, restaurant, bar and shop, and uncovering incredible new places to recommend. It was a gargantuan task. But after many months on the road and at the computer, our work was complete. The guidebook was published this spring.

Our Travels: Finger Lakes, United States

There’s a good reason the World Words team specialise in writing about travel. It’s because we’re always on the road, many of us having ticked off the bucket-list biggies a while back and now seeking out further-flung corners of the world. Our love of writing is matched only by our passion for roaming, which we like to share with our loyal readers in Our Travels blogs. So far, we’ve written about everywhere from Belarus to India, Guatemala to Oman.

Recently, one of our staff content writers Nathanael hopped on a plane to New York. But not for a city break – he didn’t so much as catch a glimpse of the Empire State Building or the Statue of Liberty. Instead, he chose to head northwest to a quiet rural region of New York state known as The Finger Lakes. Here are his highlights of the trip…
