Fabien Cousteau: Into the Deep

The legendary French explorer Jacques Cousteau inspired and educated generations about the wonders of our planet’s oceans. His career was prolific. During his lifetime, the trailblazing mariner helped develop pioneering scuba diving equipment, created more than 100 television documentaries and dozens of educational ocean-focused books, as well as the Cousteau Society environmental foundation – all of which have left a long-lasting impression. His shoes are difficult to fill, but as we discovered this month, his grandson Fabien Cousteau is not only honouring his grandfather’s legacy, but it also making his very own mark in the world of ocean exploration.

Like his famous grandfather, Fabien is a man of many talents: an ocean explorer, a documentary filmmaker, an environmental activist and a philanthropist. We interviewed Fabien for Private Air New York Magazine, catching the intrepid mariner as he resurfaced following more than a month spent living below the surface in an undersea laboratory for the Mission 31 science expedition. During our chat with the dynamic aquanaut, we spoke about the motivations behind his explorations, as well as his upcoming projects and initiatives (among them a documentary about his 31-day underwater mission and Florida’s soon-to-be-opened Fabien Cousteau Ocean Learning Centre).

A Travel Startup That Helps You Give Back – A Blog for From the Grapevine

Over the past few years, a crop of travel startups, including the likes of Aribnb and TripIt, have transformed the travel industry. They’ve been breaking the mould of what’s gone before with new and innovative ideas, some of which have changed the way we travel.

In our latest article for From the Grapevine, we took a closer look at a brand spanking new travel startup – an exciting New York-based venture called Visit.org. Visit.org is an online marketplace for socially responsible travel activities. The tours they offer are global in scope, covering destinations from the Philippines to Peru, Senegal to Tanzania, and many more besides. Working with nonprofits and community organisations, Visit.org offers a way for tourists and travellers to engage in responsible and ethical tourism. Want to learn more about what they do? Scroll down to read an excerpt from our interview, which features insights from Visit.org co-founder Michal Alter.

Like a Phoenix: Baku’s Flame Towers

Here at World Words, our expert writing team is constantly on the move and at any one time, you’ll find all our writers scattered across the globe scouring for new ideas for written travel content.

Recently, our World Words editor Joseph returned from a trip to the Azerbaijani capital Baku where he checked out the latest unique high-rise buildings to take their place in the city’s increasingly dazzling skyline: Baku’s Flame Towers. Despite only opening in 2013, this distinctly-shaped trio is already a bonafide Baku landmark and one of them is home to the rather stunning Fairmont Hotel.

This month, we contributed several articles to Private Air Magazine, among them this feature, which focuses on Baku’s Flame Towers and its Fairmont hotel. We spoke to the renowned architects behind the construction, the interior designers responsible for outfitting the sleek, stylish interiors and the lovely folk at the Fairmont too.

And with construction set to begin on the Azerbaijan Tower in 2015 — the soon-to-be world’s tallest building — we’re willing to bet this won’t be the last your hear of Baku or its skyscrapers. So scroll down to read the article.
