Discovery Blog: Top 10 Activities in South East England This Christmas

It’s that time of year again; when the wrapping paper comes out of the drawer, the mince pies are bought in bulk and everyone starts getting a little sick of the John Lewis advert. But Christmas should be about more than gift-related chores, unavoidable shopping and depressed penguins. This is a time to have fun with friends and family.

That’s why, when approached by holiday rental company Discovery Holiday Homes to create a series of monthly blogs for their website, we decided to start by looking at the brilliant activities available during the festive season.

From the Grapevine: Dead Sea Rave

Last week, while 20,000 ravers were getting their groove on, we were busy writing about it.  We produced our first travel article for Israeli-focused website, From the Grapevine. Our piece zeroed in on one of the biggest music events in the Israeli calendar, the -424 Dead Sea Rave. Never heard of it? You soon will.

It’s a huge 12-hour electronic dance music event that takes place in a secluded desert site in eastern Israel. The bad news is, you’ve already missed it, as it took place on Thursday October 23 (don’t worry, there’s always next year!) More than 20,000 ravers turned out for the occasion and it was headlined by a shedload of EDM DJ superstars, including Paul Oakenfold, Deep Dish and Dash Berlin. Not only was the lineup pretty spectacular, but the setting for the rave was too. It took place in the Judean Desert at the foot of Mount Masada. This spot also happens to be the lowest point of land on earth at 424 metres below sea level, which explains the event name.

In the build up to the rave, we caught up with the event promoter and some of the up-and-coming Israeli DJs who were scheduled to perform to hear a little more about it. The article appeared on the From the Grapevine website here, but you can also read it in full below…

Blog Bites: Clippings of Three Recent Travel Blogs Written by World Words

Another month has flown by and our travel writers have been busy scribbling away and creating a variety of travel blogs. To give you a little taster of what we’ve been up to, we’ve picked out three of our recently published blogs, which cover a variety of travel-related topics from cruising to health and wellness.

APRIL’S TOP TRAVEL LINKS

Is travel a bad idea? Wildlife photographer Paul Souders says it can be. He tells the Mother Nature Network all about his life and career, in which he jets around the world, takes photos and gets paid. That must be awful!

William L Sullivan, on the other hand doesn’t do the world, but what he doesn’t know about hiking around Oregon isn’t worth a damn. And now he’s planning a book tour.

It’s April, so why, you may be wondering, is the word “Santa” approaching rapidly? Simple. Semana Santa (there it is) is Spanish for Easter. Read all about it on About.com. The always-wonderful National Geographic has a list of 10 things to do before April dies – and, unlike us, who will have done it three times by the end of this sentence, it doesn’t mention Santa at all.

Closer to home, it’s Patriots’ Day on April 21. Head to the National Park Service website for a list of events. Meanwhile, British journalist and photographer Lee Howard followed in the footsteps of Scarlett O’Hara and Rhett Butler on the Gone with the Wind Trail.
